This module deals with the principles of industrial process control. It covers the basic concepts of instrumentation systems and its characteristics. Modes of control are also discussed covering ON/OFF, proportional, integral and derivative controls. Other strategies for controlling multi-element variables are also covered such as split-range, ratio, cascade and feed-forward control systems. Hands-on exercises are also provided in this training to enhance the knowledge and skills of trainees in the proper configuration of instrumentation and control devices.

Upon completion of the module, the participants must be able to:

1. Apply the principles of closed-loop and open-loop systems and loop networks;
2. Explain the different control modes and the operation of common process controllers;
3. Hook-up and program pneumatic and electric process controllers and run simulations with these; and,
4. Be aware of the safety practices during installation, maintenance and decommissioning of these instruments.

Participants in this course should have prior knowledge of practical electricity.
