This course covers the operation, application, basic capabilities, functional features, specifications, troubleshooting procedures and preventive maintenance of a programmable logic controller (PLC). In this course, the participant develops an appreciation of mechatronics and the many advantages of a PLC compared to conventional control systems. Emphasis is given to the actual hook-up of the PLC to common electrical and electro-pneumatic devices such as lamps, relays, contactors, solenoid valves, timers, counters, directional valves and cylinders. Hands-on exercises on testing and simulation of various practical applications with a PLC are also covered.

Upon completion of the module, the participants must be able to:

1. Distinguish a PLC control system from other types of industrial control systems
2. Describe the hardware and software aspect of a common PLC
3. Interpret PLC specifications
4. Apply troubleshooting techniques and preventive maintenance for a PLC
5. Operate and program a PLC
6. Simulate and test program circuits

Knowledge in practical electricity.
